"Injury Update: Bangladesh Captain Shakib Al Hasan's Fitness for New Zealand Tour Hangs in the Balance"
The extent of Shakib's injury will be assessed in a week's time as the Bangladesh cricket team prepares for their Test match against New Zealand in Sylhet. Meanwhile, the team's regular captain, Shakib Al Hasan, remains in Dhaka after being sidelined from the Test series due to a finger injury sustained during the World Cup. There is also apprehension regarding his participation in the New Zealand tour scheduled for December, with a clearer picture expected to emerge in the coming week.
Shakib sustained the injury to his left index finger during a World Cup match against Sri Lanka on November 6. On Wednesday, he visited the Mirpur Sher Bangla Stadium, specifically the BCB medical department, for a check-up and to have his bandages changed. BCB chief doctor Debashish Chowdhury provided insight into Shakib's condition, stating, "Shakib came on Wednesday to change the bandage. He has a crack on his finger. The finger will be bandaged and immobilized for three weeks due to the fracture. It has been two weeks already, and he will remain off the field for another week. Subsequently, we will conduct a check, including an X-ray, and make further decisions based on that report and his readiness for sports."
Following the two-match Test series against New Zealand in Sylhet and Dhaka, the Bangladesh team is scheduled to travel to New Zealand for a limited-overs series in the second week of December. The series includes three ODIs and T20Is each. Whether Shakib will be available for this tour will hinge on the assessment after three weeks, as indicated in the X-ray report. However, a preliminary assessment of his fitness for the New Zealand tour is expected after the initial week.
