Afridi Speaks Up After Fiery Fifty
Lahore Qalandars' captain, Shahid Afridi, unleashed a fiery fifty in today's Pakistan Super League match. However, his celebration was muted, signaling something more significant. After smashing 28 balls, he raised a bat in one hand and gestured a finger to his lips with the other, meaning silence!
Who was Afridi silencing? The answer lies not far away in the recent match events. It's none other than former Pakistan captain, Wasim Akram!
Speaking about Afridi's batting in the Kings vs. Qalandars match on Saturday, Akram hinted at Afridi's silence. Afridi played 3 balls and scored 1 run that day, while waiting for Sikandar Raza and David Wiese. They both later scored 46 runs off 25 balls, with Lahore losing by 3 wickets.
Reflecting on Afridi's decision after the match, Akram said on 'A Sports' program, "Shahin is yet to become an all-rounder. The team has power hitters who can increase runs in the last 3 overs. Being a captain doesn't necessarily mean batting first."
Continuing his critique, Akram added, "Understand the situation. If Shahin had gone earlier, Lahore's total would've been 190."
The next day after Akram's remarks, Lahore faced Quetta Gladiators at Karachi Stadium. Afridi, despite Raja and Wiese waiting, came to bat at 5 and scored 55 off 34 balls. However, Lahore couldn't win even in the Sunday night match.
Needing 4 runs off the last ball with 4 wickets in hand, Quetta edged past Lahore's 166 runs. Afridi, bowling today, said, "When Shahin bowls, he controls the match. But an experienced bowler like Shahin, who has been in the team for over 5 years and leads Pakistan, delivers full-length deliveries. Even if it just brushes the batsman's bat, it can be a boundary."
Afridi's team has lost 8 out of 10 matches in this ongoing season, bidding farewell to the league phase. Yet, Afridi hasn't backed down. Today, he focuses on bowling, stating, "When Shahin bowls, he controls the match. But an experienced bowler like Shahin, who has been in the team for over 5 years and leads Pakistan, delivers full-length deliveries. Even if it just brushes the batsman's bat, it can be a boundary."
