Uganda Secures 2024 T20 World Cup Berth, Zimbabwe Eliminated
Uganda has joined Namibia as the second team from the African region to qualify for the main event of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe's journey in the tournament comes to an end.
Uganda's path to qualification was straightforward – a victory in their last-round match against Rwanda would secure their spot in the World Cup. Choosing to bowl first, Uganda successfully restricted Rwanda to 65 runs in 18.5 overs. In response, they achieved a comfortable victory within 8.1 overs.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe faced a more complex scenario. Despite securing a win against Nigeria, their qualification hinged on the outcome of the Uganda match. With Uganda emerging victorious, Zimbabwe's qualification hopes were dashed, marking their first-ever absence from the World Cup.
Zimbabwe has faced challenges in recent World Cup qualifiers. They failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, and the 2021 T20 World Cup was not played due to the ICC's temporary ban, resulting from government intervention. While they progressed to the first round in the last T20 World Cup, they finished at the bottom. Winning only one match out of five in the second round, they missed the opportunity to secure a direct spot in the upcoming T20 World Cup and had to go through qualifiers.
Their qualification campaign took a hit when they lost to Namibia by 7 wickets. Despite a victory against Tanzania, a 5-wicket loss to Uganda in the third match sealed their fate. Zimbabwe's chances of progressing are now out of their control, highlighting the challenges they face in the selection process.
