BCB President Clarifies Selection Criteria Amidst Speculation Over New Cricket Panel
The tenure of the current selection panel, headed by Minhajul Abedin Nannu, is set to conclude on December 31. The uncertainty prevails regarding the formation of the new selection committee, with discussions ongoing about whether the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will opt for a fresh committee or retain the existing one. Speculation is rife about potential successors in the event of Habibul Bashar's departure.
There has been a prevailing notion that former cricketers should be a part of the national team's selection panel, representing Bangladesh. However, BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon refuted such claims, asserting that there is no stipulated rule mandating former cricketers to be part of the selection committee.
Papon addressed the media following the Victory Day Cup T20 match at Mirpur Sher Bangla Cricket Stadium, where he was asked about the criteria for individuals to secure a place on the selection panel. In response, he stated, "There is nothing like this."
Minhajul Abedin Nannu has been at the helm of the selection panel for over a decade, serving as the chief selector since 2015. Despite facing criticism at various junctures, BCB views the change in leadership as a normal and necessary process. Papon emphasized the importance of avoiding baseless accusations, stating, "Change is always good. But to exclude someone with an excuse, to exclude someone with false slander, it will cause a very bad incident."
Criticism was particularly directed at the selectors during the World Cup, prompting former national team captain Mohammad Ashraful to express his desire to become a selector. When questioned about this, Papon mentioned the existence of a committee tasked with suggesting names. The committee will evaluate interested candidates and their preferences, with the final decision resting with the board. Papon concluded by stating, "Actually who will be, who will come, it is very difficult to say at the moment. But if anyone wants, he can publish. No problem."
