English Proficiency Test: Majority of Umpires Struggle
In an effort to enhance the quality of umpires, the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) Umpires Committee recently conducted an English language proficiency test for 70 umpires. Unfortunately, only 9 umpires managed to pass the test, while the remaining 61 fell short.
Administered by the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB), the examination assessed writing, speaking, and reading skills. The proficient user category includes the 9 successful umpires, with three of them being women. Another 22 fall into the developing user category (from 10 to 31), leaving the rest, numbering 32 to 70, in the basic user category.
Given the importance of English language skills in managing matches such as the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), or international games, this proficiency test aims to ensure umpires are well-equipped. The BCB Umpires Committee emphasizes the necessity of English proficiency for umpires, particularly when handling BPL or international matches.
BCB Umpires Committee Chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu stressed the importance of language proficiency for umpires, stating, "An umpire must be proficient in English to conduct a match. Or how to talk to foreign cricketers? As we are committed to producing international quality umpires, we have also emphasized on language."
To address the language gap, the BCB plans to collaborate with AIUB to provide English courses for umpires. Mithu highlighted, "We will arrange English courses for umpires at AIUB. Those who are not skilled, they will make themselves by doing this course. If someone does not or is not proficient in English, then they will not be considered for match management in the future."
