Nepali Cricketer Sandeep Lamichane Found Guilty of Rape Charges
In a significant development, Sandeep Lamichane, the 23-year-old cricketer representing the Nepal national team, has been pronounced guilty of rape by the Kathmandu District Court. The court affirmed the validity of the rape charges, leading to Lamichane's conviction.
The trial, initially adjourned in August, resumed with its final hearing last Sunday. Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, presiding over a single bench, ruled against Lamichane. The next hearing is expected to determine the punishment for the cricketer, as reported by Nepalese media outlet "The Kathmandu Post."
Although currently on bail since the Patan High Court's order on January 12, Lamichane faced a brief period of detention following an order by the Kathmandu District Court on November 4. The court had granted his release on bail of Rs 20 lakh and conditional terms after a review petition filed by Lamichane.
The legal proceedings originated from a case filed by the Kathmandu district attorney's office on August 21, accusing Lamichane of raping a 17-year-old girl. The victim also filed a case against the cricketer on September 6, leading to his arrest at Tribhuvan International Airport on October 6.
Known as Nepal's top cricketer, Lamichane gained prominence after his international cricket debut in 2018. His cricketing achievements include 98 wickets in 51 ODIs and notable performances in T-20 matches. Lamichane holds the record for the fastest 100-wicket haul in ODIs, achieved in just 42 matches.
Recognized for his talent, Lamichane has participated in various franchise leagues, including representing Delhi Capitals in IPL 2018 and playing in Big Bash, CPL, and Pakistan Super League (PSL).
