Jyoti Dedicates Record Victory to Freedom Fighters and Martyrs
In a groundbreaking performance, Bangladesh notched up 250 runs against South Africa, rewriting the cricket history books as the highest team collection in Bangladesh's cricket history. Subsequently, on Victory Day night in East London, Niger Sultana Jyotira led her team to a record 119-run victory by bowling out South Africa for 131 runs. The margin of victory, in terms of runs, also marked a historic achievement for the Bangladesh women's team.
On Victory Day, Nigar dedicated this exceptional triumph to the courageous freedom fighters and martyrs of the liberation war. During the prize distribution ceremony after the match, the Bangladesh captain expressed, "Today (yesterday was) our Victory Day. So, I want to dedicate this victory to the martyrs and brave freedom fighters in the great liberation war."
Following Shamima's dismissal, Murshida formed three crucial partnerships with Farzana, skipper Nigar, and Swarna Akhter, contributing to Bangladesh's record collection in their ODI history. Subsequently, the Protea girls struggled against the Bangladeshi bowlers. Nigar considered losing the toss as a fortunate turn of events for her team, stating, "Losing the toss was good in the end. If I had won the toss, I would have chosen to field first."
The recent success of the Bangladesh women's team extends beyond this match. They drew the series against the formidable India last July in Mirpur and clinched a series victory against Pakistan last month at the same venue, despite falling behind initially. Celebrating the first victory in this edition on South African soil, Nigar credited the result to hard work, self-belief, and effective team management. She remarked, "We have been working hard for a long time. Trust has also developed within the team. The team management has put in a lot of effort. We were expecting good results. When expectations are met, it feels really good."
With this victory, Bangladesh takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Jyotira's team aims to secure the series with a win in the second ODI in Potchefstroom next Wednesday. Bangladesh has the opportunity to reach the top two rankings if they upset South Africa. Even a 2-1 series win would secure a spot in the top six. Nigar emphasized the significance of the upcoming matches, stating, "These 2 points are very important. The upcoming matches are more important for both teams. None of us want to go to the qualifiers."
