Bangladesh Shares Third Position in Test Championship Standings
The current Test Championship cycle kicked off this year, with all teams, except South Africa, having completed one series in the third round. The recently concluded Bangladesh-New Zealand two-match series resulted in a 1-1 tie, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to update the Test Championship points table on Saturday. Bangladesh now finds itself sharing the third position jointly with New Zealand.
The Test Championship points table is organized based on the percentage of points earned by each team. Bangladesh's journey in the new cycle began with a victory over New Zealand by 150 runs in Sylhet. However, they faced a setback in Mirpur, losing by 4 wickets to the visitors. As both a win and a loss contribute equally to 50 percent of the points, Bangladesh and New Zealand now occupy the joint third position.
At the top of the table is Pakistan, boasting a perfect record with 100% points. They achieved this by whitewashing Sri Lanka in a two-Test series in July. India follows closely in second place with a points percentage of 66.67. Their series against the West Indies saw a win in the first Test and a draw in the subsequent match.
Australia sits just below New Zealand and Bangladesh, holding a points percentage of 30 from the previous cycle. Despite being the champion in the last cycle, they had two wins, two losses, and one draw in the Ashes series against England. Additionally, Pat Cummins faced a deduction of 10 points due to a slow over rate.
In the lower half of the table, West Indies occupies the sixth position with a points percentage of 16.67, followed by England in seventh with 19 points and a points rate of 15. Sri Lanka, having lost both matches, is placed eighth, while South Africa has not yet played a match in the current cycle.
