On the very next ball, Ashwin trapped Ollie Pope lbw. The Pope killed the golden duck. England scored 19 runs for 2 wickets in 5 overs. Then Joe Root came to bat at number four. Crawley and Root made a partnership of 46 runs off 72 balls for the third wicket. Ashwin broke the pair with the last ball of the 17th over. Root scored 11 runs from 34 balls.
England scored 64 runs for 3 wickets in 17 overs on Root's departure. Crawley picked up the 11th fifty of his Test career amid the comings and goings of teammates. He made a partnership of 45 runs from 67 balls with Jonny Bairstow for the fourth wicket. Kuldeep Yadav broke the partnership by bowling Crawley in the first ball of the 29th over. Crawley's innings of 60 runs is the highest partnership in England's innings. He hit 7 fours in an innings of 91 balls.
India then chased down the target of 192 runs and ended the third day's play on 40 runs without losing a wicket in 8 overs. Indian captain Rohit Sharma was unbeaten with 24 runs off 27 balls. Another opener Yasswi Jaiswal ended the day's play with 16 off 21 balls.
