Umpiring Reckoning: Six Officials Penalized for Errors in National Cricket League
In the recently concluded National Cricket League (NCL), coaches and players expressed widespread dissatisfaction with the umpiring, prompting former cricketer Rajen Saleh, who is the head coach of the Sylhet division, to voice his criticism on social media. Responding to these concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. Following the investigation, it was confirmed that several incorrect decisions had indeed been made.
As a consequence, the decision has been made to penalize six umpires involved in the disputed decisions. However, the umpires committee is opting for a measured approach rather than imposing severe sanctions immediately. The six umpires facing punishment are Syed Mojahiduzzaman Swapan, Mohammad Wahid, Zainal Abedin, Saiful Islam Jewel, Shafiuddin Ahmed Babu, and Asadur Rahman.
For the time being, the umpires committee has decided not to assign these umpires any matches in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) or any other tournaments in the near future. As part of their penalty, the committee has implemented a policy to relegate these umpires to third-division and school cricket. Further, if mistakes persist in these lower divisions, more stringent actions may follow.
The three-member committee of the umpires committee, comprising BCB umpires educator Enamul Haque, match referee Salim Shahed, and umpires department manager Abhi Abdullah, compiled a report based on their findings. In a meeting held last Saturday, the umpires committee reviewed this report and made decisions regarding the penalties for the umpires.
In addition to the demotion of the penalized umpires, the umpires committee has also decided to conduct condolence sessions where the umpires will be held accountable for their actions. A member of the BCB's umpires committee stated, "We are bringing them down for now. They will be observed in these lower divisions. Furthermore, they will not be assigned to any tournament, including the BCL, in the near future."
