Four West Indies World Cup-Winning Cricketers Bid Farewell Together
In a collective decision that echoes the end of an era, four cricketers from the West Indies women's cricket team, who were part of the squad that secured the Women's T20 World Cup victory in 2016, have officially announced their retirement from international cricket. Anisa Mohammed, Shakera Selman, Kisiya Knight, and Kishona Knight, key members of the championship team, confirmed their retirements in unison.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) formally acknowledged the retirement of these four esteemed players in a statement issued recently. The players had previously communicated their decision to retire to the board.
Anisa Mohammed, who made her debut in the West Indies women's team at the age of 15 in 2003, enjoyed an international career spanning almost 20 years. She concluded her journey in March 2022 during the semi-final of the ODI World Cup against Australia. Anisa holds the record for the highest wicket-taker among West Indies women cricketers in both ODIs and T20Is, claiming 180 wickets in 141 ODIs and 125 wickets in 117 T20Is. Reflecting on her remarkable career, Anisa stated, "The last 20 years have been truly extraordinary. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. There were many ups and downs. In my opinion, the time has come to step away from the game and give young cricketers a chance."
Shakera Selman, who embarked on her international cricket journey in 2008, played 100 ODIs and 96 T20Is, taking 82 and 51 wickets in the respective formats. She expressed pride in her career, stating, "I am proud of the legends I have played with and against. Lucky to get a few of them wickets too. My goal was to act as an inspiration to others to realize their dreams."
The twin sisters, Kisiya and Kishona, both turning 32 in February, shared sentiments of gratitude as they bid farewell to international cricket. Kisiya, a wicketkeeper-batsman, scored 1327 runs in 87 ODIs and 801 runs in 70 T20Is, while Kishona, who began her international career in 2013, accumulated 851 runs in 51 ODIs and 546 runs in 55 T20Is. The sisters expressed their gratitude to family, friends, teammates, supporters, and Cricket West Indies for the memorable journey, stating, "An extraordinary journey has ended. Thanks to our family, friends, teammates, supporters, who have supported us over the years. Nothing would have been possible without their support and love. Thanks to CWI for the opportunity. These beautiful moments will be remembered forever.
