Joe Root Opts Out of 2024 IPL, Following Ben Stokes' Lead
The commencement of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) is a few months away, and the anticipation is building. Ahead of the release of the retention list for the upcoming IPL, scheduled for 4:30 pm Bangladesh time, England all-rounder Ben Stokes had already decided to withdraw. Now, his compatriot and teammate Joe Root has also chosen the same path, as confirmed by Root's franchise, the Rajasthan Royals.
Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket for the Rajasthan Royals, shared insights into the decision, stating, "In our recent discussions about player retention, Joe informed us of his choice to abstain from participating in the 2024 IPL. The Royals will miss the enthusiasm and experience he brought to the team, and we respect his decision."
Joe Root, who was acquired by Rajasthan Royals for a modest Rs 1 crore in the 2023 IPL auction, has decided to forego the upcoming season. Despite making his IPL debut last season, Root had limited opportunities, featuring in only three matches and batting in just one. In that solitary appearance, he scored 10 runs against Bengaluru. The Royals acknowledged his contribution, stating, "His addition to the Royals team brought a wealth of experience, providing a valuable learning opportunity for young cricketers like Dhruv Jurel, Ryan Parag, and Yasswi Jaiswal."
