The auction, which concluded on Thursday, featured Messi's jerseys from seven matches in the Qatar World Cup, where he showcased remarkable performance by scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists. The collection included jerseys from two group stage matches, the last sixteen, quarter-final, semi-final, and the final.
Sotheby's reported that after three rounds of competitive bidding, the final sale price for Messi's jerseys reached a remarkable 7.8 million US dollars. The auction spanned over two weeks and drew considerable attention from football enthusiasts and collectors alike.
A noteworthy aspect of this auction is that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Unicus Project, a charitable initiative supported by the Leo Messi Foundation and run by the Sant Joa de Dieu Children's Hospital in Barcelona. The Unicus Project focuses on aiding terminally ill children, aligning with the mission of the hospital.
Braham Wachter, Sotheby's Head of Modern Collections, highlighted the significance of these historic jerseys, stating, "These jerseys not only symbolize one of the most pivotal moments in sports but also mark the pinnacle of achievement in the career of the world's most decorated footballer."
