Cabrera's Contract Conundrum: Bangladesh Football Team's Success Sparks Salary Negotiations
Javier Cabrera, the coach of the Bangladesh football team, has been instrumental in the team's success, prompting discussions with the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) about his potential continuation with the team in the new year. Cabrera's current contract with BAFUF is set to expire on December 31, and negotiations are underway regarding his potential renewal.
The Spanish coach, seeking to return home for a holiday after the current contract concludes, has proposed a significant increase in his monthly salary for the new agreement. Cabrera, currently earning $8,000 per month, has requested $15,000, nearly double his current compensation. This demand includes various benefits, including accommodation.
Cabrera has been at the helm of the Bangladesh national team for two years, and despite a challenging first year, the team has shown remarkable improvement. Under Cabrera's guidance, Bangladesh played 13 international matches, securing six wins, three draws, and four losses. The team achieved notable draws against strong opponents like Afghanistan and Lebanon in the SAFF Championship and World Cup qualifiers, respectively.
Buoyed by these successes, Cabrera has expressed a desire to negotiate a more lucrative contract. BAFUF, recognizing his contributions, is eager to retain him but wishes to settle on mutually agreeable terms, particularly concerning salary adjustments.
Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Chairman of the National Teams Committee and a BFF vice-president, conveyed optimism about the ongoing negotiations. He stated, "Cabrera has requested an increase in salary for the new contract. We are currently in discussions with him, and I am hopeful that we will reach a decision through dialogue. We value the positive impact he has had on the Bangladesh football team, and we want to ensure that he continues to lead our team."
Amidst these negotiations, Cabrera is using his free time to visit various clubs in the Premier League and engage with national team players. With an upcoming World Cup qualifier against Palestine scheduled for March next year, Cabrera aims to keep the players in peak condition and maintain their fitness levels before the crucial match.
