Shamar Joseph's life has been turning upside down for the last few days. From Barakara, a remote village in Guyana, he struggled to reach the highest level of cricket. A year and a half ago, who was the night watchman, he became the hero of Australia's slaughter in Brisbane, and now he has made it to the central contract of Cricket West Indies.
The 24-year-old right-arm pacer Shamar has been moved from a 'franchise' contract to a 'retainer' (central) contract. "The decision has been taken in recognition of Joseph's outstanding contribution and invaluable performance in the historic win over Australia in Brisbane recently," CWI said in a press release on Thursday.

Shamar is yet to make his ODI and T20I debut. However, he has entered into consideration to get a chance in the West Indies squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Darren Sammy, coach of the two white-ball versions of the team, joked that Shamar caused his headaches. The central contract announced by the CWI last December included 14 cricketers. The number has increased to 15 with Shamar's inclusion.
List of West Indies central contracts for the 2023-24 season:
Alic Athanage, Craig Brathwaite, Casey Carty, Tejnarayan Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva, Shai Hope, Aqeel Hussain, Alzari Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Moti, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Jayden Sills, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Joseph.
