Dhaka Starts BPL with Thrilling Victory Over Comilla
The opening match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) witnessed a spectacular start as Dhaka secured a thrilling 5-wicket victory over defending champions Comilla Victorians on Friday (January 19). The encounter showcased Mohammad Naeem Sheikh and Danushka Gunathilaka's brilliant batting performances, setting the stage for a notable win.
Dhaka's strong start, with the duo taking 75 balls to complete the team's hundred, initially hinted at a dominant win. However, as the match progressed, Comilla's bowlers tightened their grip on Dhaka's batsmen. Despite the tension building in the final over, Dhaka managed to secure the win. When set batsman Irfan Sukkur got out on the second ball of the last over, the camp felt a moment of uncertainty, needing 3 runs off 4 balls. Yet, Chaturanga De Silva's six in the final moments settled the drama, allowing Dhaka to clinch a hard-fought victory.

Naeem Sheikh played a crucial role, scoring 52 runs off 40 balls, while Gunathilaka contributed 41 runs off 42 balls. The opening pair laid the foundation for the victory, putting up a partnership of 102 runs. However, once this partnership was broken, Dhaka faced challenges, losing wickets and struggling to score. In the end, Comilla added a few more runs to their total, with Irfan scoring 16 runs, and Chaturanga finishing unbeaten on 6 runs.

Comilla's Tanveer Islam and Mostafizur Rahman took 2 wickets each, presenting a formidable challenge to Dhaka's batting lineup. Pacer Shariful Islam showcased his skill by limiting Comilla to below 150 runs and achieving a hat-trick in the last over, becoming the fourth Bangladeshi to accomplish this feat in the first match of the BPL. Shariful secured a maximum of 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs, while Taskin Ahmed and Chaturanga de Silva took 2 and 1 wicket, respectively.
Earlier, Imrul Kayes and Tawheed Hriday's partnership of over 100 runs for Comilla failed to translate into a challenging T20 score, ultimately setting the stage for Dhaka's thrilling victory in the tournament opener."
