In the lead-up to the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections, a number of cricketers and organizers have obtained nomination forms. The spotlight was on Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, who garnered significant attention. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not disappoint, as the left-handed all-rounder secured the Awami League nomination for the Magura-1 seat. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader unveiled the list of nominees at the party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
Shakib collected nomination papers from Dhaka-10, Magura-1, and Magura-2 constituencies on November 18 to participate in the 12th National Assembly elections as an Awami League candidate. Additionally, the party nominated Mashrafe bin Mortuza, former captain of the national cricket team and current member of parliament, for the Narail-2 seat.
BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon, a prominent figure in Bangladesh cricket, secured a nomination from Kishoreganj-6 constituency. Former BCB director Gazi Golam Dastgir received the nomination for Narayanganj-6 seat, while Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, the current director and chairman of the women's committee, was nominated for Moulvibazar-3 seat. Kazi Nabil Ahmed, serving as the Vice President of Bangladesh Football Federation and a current Member of Parliament, obtained the nomination for Jessore-3 seat, a position he held in the previous two terms.
Unfortunately, current MP Naimur Rahman Durjoy did not receive the Awami League nomination for the Manikganj-1 seat, indicating a lack of trust from the party.
In total, 3,369 individuals have purchased Awami League's party nomination forms for the 300 seats, each vying for the boat symbol in the upcoming national elections. On average, 11 individuals have acquired nomination forms per seat. As per the Election Commission's schedule, the 12th National Assembly elections are slated for January 7, with the last date for submitting nomination papers on November 30.
