Marlon Samuels has been handed a six-year ban from all forms of cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The former West Indies batsman faced charges in September 2021 related to violations of the Emirates Cricket Board's (ECB) anti-corruption code. An independent anti-corruption tribunal conducted by the UAE Cricket Board found Samuels guilty, leading to the ICC imposing the six-year ban, effective from November 11, 2023.
Samuels was found to have breached four specific clauses. The first charge was related to his failure to report any gift, hospitality, or other benefits from individuals in circumstances that could bring cricket and its participants into disrepute. The second charge involved accepting hospitality valued at $750 without disclosing it to the anti-corruption officer. The third charge was for not cooperating with the anti-corruption officer during the investigation. The fourth charge pertained to impeding the investigation by withholding information that could aid the anti-corruption officer.
Having enjoyed a prolific 18-year career with the West Indies, Samuels played over three hundred matches for the national team. As a batsman with 17 centuries to his name, he also captained the West Indies in ODIs. Samuels played a crucial role in West Indies' success in the T20 World Cup, contributing significantly to their victories in the 2012 and 2016 editions with his exceptional batting performances.
