Mohammedan and Abahani Clash in Same Federation Cup Group After 14-Year Title Duel
After a thrilling victory over Abahani in the Federation Cup final, Mohammedan claimed their first title in 14 years. As the new edition of the Federation Cup approaches, fate has once again placed these arch-rivals in the same group. Joining them are Chittagong Abahani and Fera Brothers Union from the Championship League, setting the stage for intense competition.
The draw, held yesterday, divided ten teams into three groups, with Mohammedan Abahani's group consisting of four teams, while the other two groups have three and six teams each. The Premier League kicks off on December 22, followed by the Federation Cup, featuring ten teams, just four days later.
In Group C, Bashundhara Kings face formidable opponents on paper, including Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra and Forties FC. Group A sees Sheikh Jamal Dhanam Club, Police FC, and Rahmatganj MFS vying for supremacy. The tournament will be hosted across three venues: Munshiganj, Gopalganj, and Bashundhara Kings Arena, with the final scheduled for May 24.

The decision to place the two most successful teams, Abahani and Mohammedan, in the same group has raised eyebrows. Both teams have a rich history in the Federation Cup, with Abahani claiming the title 12 times and Mohammedan 11 times in the previous 33 editions. The Bangladesh Football Federation justifies the grouping by considering the point table of the league from the last season, emphasizing league performance over previous cup standings.
Meanwhile, Bashundhara Kings' journey in Group C presents its own challenges, particularly from Sheikh Russell Sports Circle. This group remains open, with three-time Federation Cup winner Sheikh Jamal Dhanom-i Club emerging as the favorite. Police FC and Rahmatganj are poised to pose formidable challenges in this exciting group.
