Shakib Opts Out of IPL and PSL for National Duty
Bangladeshi cricket star Shakib Al Hasan has made a notable decision to refrain from participating in franchise cricket tournaments such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with a primary focus on serving the national team. This decision marks a departure from his consistent involvement in various T20 leagues around the world, including the Caribbean Premier League.
Throughout his career, Shakib has maintained an unwavering commitment to the national team, even amidst the demanding schedules of franchise cricket. In a recent event held in the United States, he disclosed the reasoning behind this unusual move, stating, "I did not even register for the IPL. When my manager submitted my name for the PSL, I requested its removal. I am dedicating all my time to the national team, and I might sacrifice participation in tournaments that I used to play for franchises."
Shakib's absence from the recent two-match Test series against New Zealand at home was attributed to a finger injury sustained during the World Cup. Despite his initial hopes of a swift recovery to join the New Zealand tour, the healing process proved more time-consuming than anticipated. Currently undergoing advanced treatment in the United States, Shakib expressed his disappointment at missing the upcoming three ODIs and three T20Is against New Zealand.
"I had high hopes of joining the team in New Zealand for at least one ODI and T20 match. Unfortunately, the recovery is taking longer than expected—approximately six weeks. Following that, fitness rehabilitation is necessary, and with the upcoming BPL and an election on the horizon, my schedule is quite busy in the coming weeks," Shakib lamented.
This decision underscores Shakib's unwavering commitment to prioritize national duty over lucrative franchise commitments, demonstrating his dedication to representing Bangladesh on the international stage.
